Johnston Longhorns is located in southwestern Oklahoma...midway between Oklahoma City and the Wildlife Refuge (home of WR Longhorns) near Lawton, Oklahoma.
Since June, 2002, Amigo Chex has been our herd sire. He is a mostly black bull out of the Bob Loomis program in Marietta, Oklahoma. Born in 1998, his sire is BL Night Chex and his dam is JMC Phenomenal Peggy Sue. The El Coyote Ranch in Kingsville, Texas, purchased Amigo Chex from Bob in 1999. We first saw him in the fall of 2001, when we visited the El Coyote Ranch to purchase some heifers for our program. Mel Raley, the ranch manager, gave us a "grand tour" of their longhorn ranch. We did buy some heifers, but we also saw a "big, black, beautiful" bull that we really wanted. By the next spring we were able to buy Amigo Chex and bring him back to Oklahoma.
During the past three years we have sold some beautiful Amigo Chex daughters; however, we still have 19 in our herd. So last fall we started "bull shopping" again. Luckily, thanks to a good "longhorn friend" (Tom Wittrock), our search ended with another Bob Loomis bull named Beau Chex, also born in 1998.
Beau Chex, a Coach son, is a dark red and white Butler bull. We feel very fortunate to have these two bulls, and are very excited to see what this "Chex Mix" produces.
For now we are using Beau Chex as our herd sire and have decided to sell half-interest in Amigo Chex to another longhorn breeder. He is still "big, black, and beautiful" and has a wonderful disposition - very easy to haul and work with. He is also A.I. certified - semen is available for $50.00 per straw.
We would love for you to come visit our ranch to check out our herd. Give us a call for price quotes or to plan a visit.
